President's Pen

President’s Pen – June 2018

Fifteen people from Michigan attended the 2018 National Education Conference (NEC) in Norfolk, VA earlier last month. MiSGMP board members were involved in the Joint Leadership Session on Monday and the Leadership Training on Tuesday; Karalee McKinstry took the CGMP class and passed the CGMP test (Congratulations, Karalee!); we presented A Case of ADA Compliance as a breakout session; and we attended informative and engaging general sessions and breakout sessions Wednesday and Thursday. At the Gilmer Institute of Learning Banquet, MiSGMP received the Chapter Recognition Award, Honors Level; the highest level awarded in 2018. The Chapter Recognition Awards are determined by fiscal year-to-date review of specific criteria pertaining to overall operations performance in the fulfillment of the Society’s mission for its members.

The 2019 NEC is being held June 25-27 in Detroit – and the Michigan chapter needs to be well represented! The board hopes to increase the number of scholarships the chapter can provide to support member attendance. The primary source of scholarship funding is the revenue from the MiSGMP annual auction, which is Wednesday, September 12 at the Crowne Plaza Lansing West. So, mark your calendars, start gathering auction donations, and come ready to bid, and bid high!

The first-ever MiSGMP Knowledge Quest, held June 20th in Frankenmuth, was a huge success. Thank you to the Frankenmuth CVB, Great Lakes Bay Regional CVB, the Bavarian Inn and all of their partners for an extremely well run and engaging event! Next year’s Knowledge Quest will be in Kalamazoo; date to be determined.

Remember, there is not a MiSGMP monthly meeting in July. Our next meeting is August 15, in conjunction with the Halo Showcase, this year titled Halopalooza, at Eagle Eye Golf Club. Details will be forthcoming in emails and on the MiSGMP website.

Happy summer!

MiSGMP Community Service July-September 2018

Refugee Development Center

Erika Brown-Binion

Their mission is to cultivate a welcoming, thriving community that collaborates with refugees and newcomers through education, engagement and support.  The Refugee Development Center (RDC) is a grassroots organization offering formal and informal learning opportunities in an open and inclusive setting. The RDC opened in 2002 because the Greater Lansing community identified service area gaps for newcomer populations seeking self-sufficiency. The common denominator in the gaps identified revolved around education, and hence, the mission of the center was born. Today, the RDC helps serve as the link between newcomer populations and the private, public, and faith-based communities of Ingham County.  Cite:
