Refugee Development Center

Their mission is to cultivate a welcoming, thriving community that collaborates with refugees and newcomers through education, engagement and support.  The Refugee Development Center (RDC) is a grassroots organization offering formal and informal learning opportunities in an open and inclusive setting. The RDC opened in 2002 because the Greater Lansing community identified service area gaps for newcomer populations seeking self-sufficiency. The common denominator in the gaps identified revolved around education, and hence, the mission of the center was born. Today, the RDC helps serve as the link between newcomer populations and the private, public, and faith-based communities of Ingham County.  Cite: http://www.refugeedevelopmentcenter.org/about/

Conflict Resolution Skills for Healthy Relationships

Conflict is a predictable part of virtually all relationships but it can also be a significant source of stress.  Therefore, with most conflicts, it’s important to find a resolution. This seems like a statement of the obvious, but many people suppress their anger or just go along to get along.  Many think that by addressing a conflict they are creating one, and simply keep quiet when upset. Unfortunately, this isn’t a healthy long-term strategy; unresolved conflict can lead to resentment and additional unresolved conflict in the relationship. Resolving conflict can be tricky. Handled improperly, attempts at conflict resolution can actually make the conflict worse in a relationship. Studies can actually predict how a relationship will go by observing their conflict resolution skills -- or lack thereof.

Explore practical illustrations and gain tools and skills on how to have self/others’ awareness for recognition and management of emotions during conflict to achieve success!  Learn important techniques for defusing, managing and utilizing emotions, creating a safe environment for open communication, and how to maintain strong, productive connections for personal and organizational success.

The House of Promise: A SAFE PLACE TO HEAL

The House of Promise is a 501c3 nonprofit origination that provides survivors of sex abuse and sex trafficking unconditional love, acceptance, and a place to heal. Our goal is to disrupt the destructive patterns of slavery through education and care for the survivors. We do this through training, counseling, and helping the young girls/women relearn basic skills, so that they can rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society.

Human trafficking is a major issue in the world, with not enough being done to fight it or help its victims. With statistics at 1 in 3 women being sexually abused in their lifetime, the work that we do is incredibly important.
